Display - Sony to Release FPD TV Equipped With PS2 Chips
August 12, 2004
In fall 2004 Sony plans to rollout new flat-panel TVs equipped with advanced game console chips. The release marks an acceleration of Sony's original timetable to introduce next generation digital devices by 2006.

The new flat-panel TV will adopt the standard chips used in Sony's PlayStation 2 (PS2) and PlayStation X (PSX), but with enhanced features that simplify interface control functions, boost reaction times, and increase processing capabilities. Sony believes the chips provide added value at relatively low cost.

Presently, Sony is working with IBM and Toshiba to conduct research on a "cell chips" for next generation digital devices. The future of these experimental cell chips is by no means limited to Sony's game consoles, but may also enjoy wide usage in flat-panel TVs and other digital applications. Cell chips are expected to enter mass production sometime during 2005, with Sony estimating that the release of products equipped with such chips will fall sometime during 2005 or 2006.
